Souter Lighthouse

Imagine you’re a lighthouse keeper at Souter. Explore interactive activities and climb 76 steps to the top of the tower, where you’ll find a huge lamp and views stretching for miles. The Foghorn Field, rocky bays and over two miles of grassland offer space to run, play and picnic.

Other Facilities

The Lighthouse Café serves hot and cold drinks, light bites and cakes to eat in or take away. Free entry.

Find our second-hand bookshop, with a children’s section, in the lighthouse admissions area.

Whitburn Coastal Conservation Centre has a touch screen with information about the surrounding coast.

We have picnic benches around the lighthouse, some of which are under cover. Or bring a picnic blanket to spread on the grass of The Leas or Whitburn Coastal Park. Barbecues are not permitted due to potential serious damage and fire risk.

Lighthouse toilets are open in line with the café. Baby changing facilities available. There are accessible toilets in Whitburn Coastal Conservation Centre near the lighthouse car park – one inside and one outside the entrance. There is a Changing Places fully accessible toilet opposite the Lighthouse Café.

Nearest Metro: South Shields

Bus: Stagecoach E1 from South Shields stops at Souter Lighthouse

Car park: open 9am – 8pm daily (closes 6pm November – March). Charges 9am – 8pm: £1 for 1 hour, £2 for 2 hours, £3 for 4 hours, £4 all day, or free for National Trust members.

Cycling: National Cycle Network Route 1 runs past the lighthouse and you can pick it up from both Seaburn and South Shields Metro stations.
