Our mission

Our ultimate Vision is a future where:

The cultural sector thrives and all North East families’ lives are enriched by superb arts and culture.

Family Explorers North East’s mission is to:

Enable the North East cultural sector to be family-friendly, ensure family voices inform the sector’s decision-making and remove barriers so that all families can connect with culture.

Who we are

Established in 2013 by the region’s culture sector, Family Explorers North East is run by the North East Family Arts Network. Read more about our history.

We are one of the Family Arts Campaign’s (FAC) Family Arts Networks. We receive funding and support both from them and the cultural organisations across the North East listed on the Brilliant Places page.

Only publicly funded, trusted cultural organisations are invited to join. They are all asked to sign up to the Family Arts Standards to show their commitment to providing the best experience for families.

It’s managed on a day-to-day basis by Sallyanne Flemons (Director) and Bethanie Wardell (Digital Officer).

A multi-skilled steering group guides us, chaired by Sheryl McGregor, Communications & Development Manager for our lead organisation, North East Museums.

About our research-led approach

Family Explorers North East operates a deeply considered approach to supporting families on their cultural journeys, underpinned by robust research.

In 2013, Newcastle Gateshead Cultural Venues consortium (NGCV) commissioned audience development consultants Morris Hargreaves McIntyre to find out how families could be supported to try new cultural experiences.

It found families:

  • were more likely to try a new cultural experience if it was recommended by peers.
  • wanted more practical information to hand before making a visit to somewhere new.
  • felt overwhelmed by the choice of places to go, preferring instead to stick with places they already knew.

Family Explorers North East helps families tackle these by providing a platform to share recommendations with others through a Facebook Group. We curate trustworthy cultural events suitable for families both by posting on the group and in a regular e-newsletter.

The Brilliant Places section of this website also enables families to discover new places by seeing all the practical information they need at a glance.

We are also passionate about ensuring our cultural places hear from families directly about they want from their visits.
